This page provides data about housing at San Clemente.

Here are some recent facts about graduate housing in San Clemente Village (SCV):

  • At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, 51% of SCV residents were graduate students, while 49% were undergraduates.  Over the past five years, more undergraduates are living in San Clemente as a ratio of the overall residential population; the ratio of graduates-to-undergraduates as declined 6.5% each year since Fall 2009.  The graduate student retention rate at SCV was 34% in 2013-2014, meaning that nearly two-thirds of graduate student residents the prior year chose to live elsewhere or completed their time at UCSB.
  • Rent at San Clemente has increased steadily year-to-year since it opened, rising 4% per year.  This is because UCSB has to repay its public debt obligation bonds (through which UCSB raised money to construct SCV) which increase 4% per year.
  • Beginning Spring 2013, graduate residents who choose to continue living in San Clemente can lock-in their rent, without it increasing yearly, as long as they remain in SCV. This change was brought about through discussions between GSA, SCV residents, and Housing administrators.
  • Prior to Fall 2012, all San Clemente rental contracts lasted 11.5 months. Since Fall 2012, graduate students can choose between three contracts: 9 months, 10 months, and 11.5 months. This change was brought about through discussions between GSA, SCV residents, and Housing administrators.
  • Below is a chart displaying San Clemente occupancy and retention rates, ratios of graduate to undergraduate student residents, and the monthly rent at USCB since SCV was constructed in 2008.

“Retention” refers to the number of graduate students that remain in SCV from one year to the next.

“Ratio” is in reference to the total percentage of graduate to undergraduate residents at SCV.

*Note that SCV rates are listed per person, not per unit.  Multiply the rent by the number of bedrooms to see the rate for the total unit.  SCV residents are only responsible for their individual rent, not for their roommates’ rent.  All SCV bedrooms are single occupancy.
